The Best Time to Hydroseed in Oklahoma: A Seasonal Guide
One of the most common questions we hear from Oklahoma homeowners is: “When is the best time of year to hydroseed?” The answer depends on which type of grass you want to grow — and understanding the difference is key to getting the best results.
Warm-Season Grasses: Spring and Early Summer
Oklahoma's most popular lawn grasses — Bermuda, Zoysia, and Buffalo Grass — are warm-season varieties that need warm soil temperatures to germinate. For these grasses, the ideal hydroseeding window is late April through July, when soil temperatures are consistently above 65°F.
Seeding too early (before the last frost) risks killing emerging seedlings. Seeding in late summer gives the grass insufficient establishment time before Oklahoma's first fall frost, which can set the lawn back significantly.
Cool-Season Grasses: Fall is Best
Tall Fescue and other cool-season grasses prefer cooler soil temperatures for germination. In Oklahoma, the ideal window for cool-season hydroseeding is mid-September through mid-October. Fall seeding allows the grass to establish through the mild Oklahoma fall and winter before facing the stress of summer heat.
Spring is a secondary option for cool-season seeding, but plants established in spring face Oklahoma's brutal summer heat after only a few months of growth — meaning they often struggle or require heavy watering to survive.
